Soccer Star Pogba Tests Positive for Testosterone, Receives 4-Year Suspension

Paul Pogba faces a four-year suspension from professional soccer, as declared on Thursday, following a positive test for a prohibited substance in August 2023.

The Juventus midfielder was initially put on temporary suspension by the Italian National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO Italia) in September of the previous year.

After the temporary suspension, NADO Italia disclosed that testosterone, known for its potential to enhance physical endurance, was found in Pogba’s system subsequent to Juventus’ 3-0 victory over Udinese. During the match, Pogba did not play but was listed as an unused substitute.

Reacting to the ruling made on Thursday, Pogba announced his intention to appeal, asserting he would “never engage in any conduct to boost [his] performance.”

“Today, I was notified about the decision made by the Tribunale Nazionale Antidoping and I firmly believe that the judgment is mistaken,” Pogba expressed via Instagram.

“I am filled with sadness, disbelief, and devastation as my professional career’s achievements are stripped away from me. I am bound by legal constraints at this moment, but when I am not, the complete truth will emerge. I want to make it clear that I have never intentionally or knowingly consumed any substance that breaches anti-doping rules,” he continued.

Pogba emphasized his integrity as a professional athlete, stating, “I have always respected my competitors and supporters, never resorting to banned substances to enhance my performance. I have never dishonored or deceived the teams I’ve played with or against.”

“In light of today’s announcement, I am compelled to appeal this decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.”

Following the announcement of Pogba’s suspension, NADO Italia has opted not to comment.
